Shirtdress, BurdaStyle Magazine 06-2008-108

Avaliability:

This is a BurdaStyle Magazine pattern from the June 2008 issue. Pattern number 108.

Pattern type:

Shirtdress

Rating:

Highly recommend.

Pattern Description:

Shirtdress pattern with elastic waist and darts both in the front and the back. Knee length.

Pattern Sizing:

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Yup. Except for the obvious difference that I omitted the sleeves…;-)

Were the instructions easy to follow?

I didn´t have any trouble following the instructions, although I must admit that I usually use my Vogue Sewing book when I am attaching collars.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I liked the darts shaping the waist on this dress. This is a clever way of adding waist definition without the “troubles” of more pattern pieces. I also liked the substantial collar. It is actually quite large!

Fabric Used:

I used a white and blue gingham shirting fabric purchased at Mood Fabrics in NY.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

I omitted the sleeves, I had them cut out and ready to be used, but I liked the way it looked without the sleeves, so I made some facings instead and left it like that.

I also made a FBA.

I omitted the elastics in the waist as well – I almost always use this dress with a belt, so I figured the elastics were unnecessary .

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

I might make this again, maybe this time with the sleeves. I´ll absolutely recommend it to others. Lovely pattern!

Conclusion:

A good and basic shirt dress pattern.

Pattern Review: Vi Mode Mönster 1537

August 25, 2011 in pattern review, patterns, sewing, vintage

Vi Mode Mönster was a swedish pattern company. I am guessing that this pattern is from the 1970´s.

Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?

Yes.

Were the instructions easy to follow?

The instructions were quite clear, I didn´t really have any troubles with them.

What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?

I really like the construction of the skirt on this dress. It´s so unbelievably flow-y and nice! I also really like the kimono sleeves on view A, and the darts on view B.

Fabric Used:

For view A I used a madras cotton bought in Paris, for view B I used a thrifted tablecloth, a blend of cotton and linen.

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:

I didn´t make any changes to view A. For view B, I omitted the ruffled hem.

Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?

I might just as well make this again, and if you get your hands on this pattern, be sure to snatch it up, because it has a great construction, and a thought- through design with lots of options!

Conclusion:

A pattern I love, and have used two times already, great instructions and perfectly constructed pattern!

Pattern Review: New Look 6000

August 23, 2011 in pattern review, patterns, retro style, sewing

One of the best things about the sewing community is, in my opinion, pattern reviews. I love the fact that I can visit PatternReview, BurdaStyle, My Sewing Circle or the vintage pattern wiki and find out whether a pattern is worth making or not. So in an effort to try and contribute more frequently to that community myself, I will post reviews of patterns I have used, and add them to PR as well. My ambition is to add at least one review per week. We´ll see if I manage to do just that! :-)

 Pattern Description:

Misses’ retro style dress with front, sleeve and neck variations.
Pattern Sizing:
4-16
Did it look like the photo/drawing on the pattern envelope once you were done sewing with it?
Absolutely. I made view C in the wool twill, and view A in a rayon knit.

Technical drawing of NL6000

Were the instructions easy to follow?
This pattern was an absolute delight to follow, the instructions were easy to grasp and I had no concerns what so ever.
What did you particularly like or dislike about the pattern?
I really loved the fact that the paper pattern had separate front pieces for each size. No tracing necessary. I also loved the construction of the sleeve cuffs and the neck. Another great detail is the pleated waist.
Fabric Used:
I used a thrifted wool fabric, twill woven. A quite sturdy material, but great for this type of dress. I have also made this dress using a knit rayon fabric with good results, I just went down one size!

Pattern alterations or any design changes you made:
I made a FBA by adding bust darts. it worked like a charm. Other than that, I didn´t do any alterations.
Would you sew it again? Would you recommend it to others?
I have already made two versions of this dress, and will probably make another one in the nearby future. I will definitely recommend this!
Conclusion:
A super flattering dress and a great pattern, that I absolutely will recommend to others!
